Before you’ve fully opened your eyes, your AI has already read your emails, analyzed your calendar, cross-referenced your biometric data with global weather patterns, and determined that you’ll need an umbrella, a different route to work, and perhaps a gentle nudge to reschedule that outdoor lunch. It knows you better than you know yourself—or so it claims.
This scenario isn’t speculative. It’s Google’s roadmap for the next few years, powered by what they call their Google AI world model.
At I/O 2025, Google revealed something far more ambitious than incremental improvements to search or chat. The company announced it now processes 480 trillion tokens monthly while building their AI world model that “simulates aspects of the world, just like the brain does.” They’re positioning themselves as reality’s new middleware—the technological layer between you and everything you experience.
As VentureBeat’s comprehensive coverage details, Demis Hassabis declared Google’s commitment to “doubling down” on artificial general intelligence while developing their Google AI world model. This represents a fundamental shift from building tools to becoming the interpreter of reality itself.
The language Google uses—”universal AI assistant” that “thinks things into existence”—isn’t accidental marketing speak. Technology scholars recognize this as the absorption of theological metaphors into computing, where technical solutions replace spiritual salvation and “all eternal questions become engineering problems.” Corporate design decisions are actively redefining the boundaries between computation and consciousness, simulation and reality, direct experience and mediated interpretation.
This matters because what Google builds shapes how billions of people think about and interact with the world. Google’s AI world model could fundamentally alter human agency and authentic experience.
Let’s start with the fundamental questions this moment demands. In my work on the Now Next Continuum, I’ve learned that the most consequential questions focus on the humans technology is supposed to serve.
Who decides what constitutes “real-world dynamics”? When Google’s AI world model claims to understand reality “like the brain does,” we’re watching computational processes transform into epistemological authority. This goes beyond statistical modeling into something technology researchers call “metaphorical literalism”—confusing pattern recognition with genuine understanding.
What happens to human agency when prediction becomes providence? Google’s “proactive” AI doesn’t just respond to your needs; it anticipates them. Psychology research documents our tendency to anthropomorphize AI systems, outsourcing meaning-making to technologies that simulate comprehension. When your AI “thinks things into existence” for you, whose thoughts are they really?
How do we preserve authentic experience in an algorithmically mediated world? A system that “understands the world around you” necessarily watches everything. This represents what surveillance studies scholars call the digital panopticon made ambient—constant observation disguised as helpful service.
Google’s $200 billion search advertising engine provides the economic foundation determining what gets prioritized in their Google AI world model. When human attention becomes raw material for training AI systems, the cognitive commons transforms into a marketplace where meaning itself gets commodified.
This creates a fascinating tension. Google needs to serve users well enough to maintain engagement while serving advertisers well enough to generate revenue. When AI becomes the interface to reality, this tension becomes existential.
Consider Google’s integration strategy: Project Astra’s real-time video understanding flows into Gemini Live’s screen sharing, building toward Sundar Pichai’s vision of AR glasses as “maybe that’s the next leap.” Each piece creates technological providence—a deterministic system positioning itself as the cosmic interpreter of daily life.
The business model works by making mediation invisible. The more seamlessly Google’s AI anticipates your needs, the less you question the lens through which it filters reality.
Here’s where we need to think carefully about the harms of action versus harms of inaction—another framework from my work that helps clarify complex technological choices.
Harms of action appear immediately and visibly: privacy erosion, cognitive dependency, the documented risk of “consciousness inflation” where we attribute understanding to systems that lack genuine interiority. When Google’s Project Mariner can navigate the web “on your behalf,” you shift from agent to passenger in your own information ecosystem.
Harms of inaction emerge more subtly but carry potentially greater consequences: falling behind competitors, missing beneficial applications, allowing less thoughtful actors to shape AI development. Doing nothing remains a choice—one that cedes decision-making to others.
This brings us to what I call the “serendipity problem.” Predictive AI eliminates unexpected discoveries by design. When your assistant anticipates your needs before you know them yourself, you lose what scientists call unstructured attentiveness to phenomena—the capacity for surprise that drives both personal growth and scientific discovery.
Consider what we lose when efficiency becomes the primary value. Heidegger’s concept of “enframing” shows how everything becomes “standing reserve” for technological optimization. Google’s approach risks automating wonder itself.
Let’s talk about place—something often overlooked in discussions of AI but crucial for understanding what’s at stake.
Anthropologist Marc Augé’s concept of “non-places” describes spaces of transience where humans remain anonymous—airports, shopping malls, highways. Augé warned that “supermodernity” creates excessive information and excessive space, flattening the rich specificity of place-based knowledge.
Google’s “universal” assistant accelerates this process. When everything becomes data to be processed rather than places to be inhabited, we lose what makes locations meaningful. The difference between computational “understanding” of space and lived spatial experience matters deeply for human flourishing.
Technology philosopher Albert Borgmann’s analysis of “focal things and practices” versus technological “devices” illuminates what’s happening. Focal practices require engagement—learning to cook, tending a garden, having a conversation. Devices promise the same outcomes with less effort, but they eliminate the meaningful engagement that makes those activities worthwhile.
Google’s world model threatens to turn physical space itself into another device—a convenient interface rather than a place of dwelling.
The contrast with Microsoft’s approach reveals different philosophies about human-AI relations. Where Google embraces technological providence—a deterministic system guiding users toward predetermined outcomes—Microsoft’s “UI for AI” preserves human agency as the prime mover.
These represent competing visions of what technology should do for humanity. Interface versus operating system. Tool versus intermediary. Enhancement versus replacement.
Consumer adoption patterns will determine which vision prevails, making these design choices consequential far beyond the tech industry.
This analysis rejects both AI rejection and technological pessimism. The goal is what Heidegger called a “free relation to technology”—using powerful tools without being used by them.
First, demand transparency over “magic.” When systems claim to understand reality, we need “metaphorical literacy”—clear explanations of how AI systems work and acknowledgment of their limitations. Technology researchers emphasize that “we color the world with human faults through denial of subjectivity.” AI systems must acknowledge their perspectival limits.
Second, design for agency over automation. The most successful human-AI collaborations preserve what researchers call “existential agency”—meaningful choice in how technologies augment rather than replace human capabilities.
Third, prioritize place-based over universal solutions. Contextual, culturally-specific AI systems honor local knowledge and ways of being rather than imposing algorithmic interpretations that flatten human diversity.
Looking ahead through the Questions-Insights-Foresights model, several scenarios emerge:
If current trends continue, we’re heading toward a world where algorithmic mediation becomes so pervasive that unmediated experience feels foreign. This could create what technology critics call “computational simulacra”—artificial realities that overwrite direct human engagement with the world.
But alternatives remain possible. AI systems could be designed to amplify rather than replace human agency, to enhance rather than eliminate authentic experience, to support rather than supplant our ongoing project of making meaning in an uncertain world.
The difference depends on choices being made right now in corporate boardrooms, government offices, and individual purchasing decisions.
Here’s what gives me optimism: humans are remarkably good at recognizing and rejecting technologies that diminish rather than enhance our capabilities. We’ve seen this with social media backlash, privacy advocacy, and growing interest in digital wellness.
The key is conscious engagement. Being thoughtful consumers of AI-mediated experiences means asking hard questions about the technologies we adopt. Does this expand my agency or constrain it? Does it enhance my understanding of the world or replace it with algorithmic interpretation? Does it support my relationships and communities or isolate me further?
Preserving spaces for unmediated human experience becomes a form of cognitive and spiritual ecology—maintaining the conditions necessary for human meaning-making to flourish.
Google’s world model represents one possible future—perhaps the most likely one if we remain passive consumers. But technology isn’t destiny. Corporate design decisions shape our options, but they don’t determine our choices.
The conversation we’re having right now—about agency, authenticity, and the kind of future we want to build—is itself a form of resistance to the totalization of mediated experience.
That’s worth protecting.
