As the CEO of KO Insights and a passionate advocate for human-centered technology and tech ethics, I’ve had the incredible privilege of attending the recent Summit of the Future Action Days at the United Nations. This gathering brought together global leaders (at one point I found myself having coffee and a friendly chat with someone I later learned was a former prime minister of New Zealand) with innovators and changemakers. The multi-faceted agenda was a powerful reminder of the critical juncture we find ourselves in as we navigate the conflicting priorities of our age.
The summit had a three-pillar focus: on digital transformation and digital inclusion, sustainability, and peace. This offered a comprehensive framework for addressing the most pressing challenges of our time. As we stand on the cusp of unprecedented technological advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning, it’s clear that our decisions today will shape the world of tomorrow.
One of the most striking themes that emerged was the urgent need for digital inclusion and cooperation. In an era where AI and machine learning are revolutionizing industries at breakneck speed, we must ensure that the benefits of these emerging technologies are equitably distributed. The digital divide is not just a technological issue; it’s a fundamental human rights concern that demands our immediate attention and innovative solutions.
A key takeaway for business leaders is the imperative of building trust in our increasingly digital world. As we develop and deploy AI systems and smart technologies that have far-reaching impacts on society, transparency and accountability must be at the forefront of our strategies. This aligns perfectly with the core message of my upcoming book, What Matters Next: A Leader’s Guide to Making Human-Friendly Tech Decisions in a World That’s Moving Too Fast, which explores the intersection of technology and humanity from the perspective of leadership decision-making, and is set to release in January 2025.

The summit also highlighted the transformative potential of digital technologies for small businesses and rural communities. By democratizing access to market insights and digital strategies, we can foster more inclusive economic growth and create opportunities in areas traditionally left behind by technological progress, bridging the urban-rural digital divide.
On the sustainability front, the discussions underscored the inextricable link between digital innovation and environmental stewardship. The concept of “Prevention means investment in Sustainable Development” resonated strongly, emphasizing the need for long-term thinking in our approach to both technology and ecology, including the use of green tech and sustainable AI practices.
As we look to the future, it’s clear that the convergence of AI, sustainability, and human-centered design will be the cornerstone of successful digital transformation strategies. Business leaders must embrace this holistic approach, recognizing that our technological decisions have profound implications for both people and the planet, shaping the future of business and society.

The UN Summit for the Future culminated in the adoption of a Pact for the Future in a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility to shape a digital future that serves all of humanity. As we navigate the complexities of AI, machine learning, and digital transformation, let’s commit to making decisions that prioritize human well-being, foster inclusivity, and pave the way for a more sustainable and peaceful world.
The journey ahead is challenging, but with thoughtful leadership and a commitment to what truly matters, we can harness the power of technology to create a future that’s not just digitally advanced, but fundamentally human-friendly.
